Commercial HF Antenna Shoot-out by Jim Peterson, K6EI Tired of all the antenna advertising hype in the radio magazines? When push comes to shove, what is the most efficient commercial multiband HF vertical? Which triband yagi really provides the most gain on 10, 15 and 20 meters? N0AX and K7LXC recently assembled, installed, rigorously tested, and compared the far field performance of a wide variety of commercial HF antennas against calibrated reference antennas, including eight different multiband verticals, nine triband yagis, and a quad. Some of their test results may surprise you as much as they surprised me. |

Unexpected,
Available, Unassigned and Needed Polar HF Spectrum by John W. Ballard Recent research into ionospheric radio propagation across polar paths has revealed a new and previously unknown phenomenon that could potentially be used for improved ionospheric radio communication. For polar paths, the ionosphere isn't fixed and stable; it is turbulent. Measured data shows random blobs and patches of high electron density that change character rapidly. A time-lapse movie of ionograms taken over a 12 hour period will show what really happens up there. Speaker: John W. Ballard is a founding partner of Radio Propagation Services, Inc. He is former President and Chairman of Technology for Communications International, a company specializing in high frequency (HF) engineering and products such as ionospheric chirp sounders, international shortwave broadcast antenna arrays, and precision ground-based HF radio direction finding systems. |
